Are fighters allowed to make political statements or do they just choose not to?
One fighter that makes a statement and carries his affiliation proud is Roman Gonzales who is a proud Sandinista. This a radical political group from Nicaragua that hates the United States , yet HBO allows him to fly the flag proudly on national TV.
This would be the equivalent of Lomachenko carrying the flag of the former USSR to the ring in the Ukraine, very blasphemous.
Floyd Mayweather , while being a great fighter has rarely ever spoken out about the problems in urban America where he had his beginnings. From the way he acts sometimes you would think he was born with money. His mom did drugs ,his dad sold them after a not so stellar boxing career and in many ways in retirement Floyd could do alot for his hometown of Grand Rapids than throw a party and give out yard birds. He has no endorsements so there would be nothing for him to lose addressing some of the issues going on in the urban community.
Gennady Golovkin made quite a statement by just meeting with Trump publicly at his fight with David Lemieux. GGG always quoting how he loves Mexican style and that the Mexicans love him, they don't love Donald Trump. It has not seemed to affect his popularity but what about the next time he meets a future politicain? David Duke maybe?
